A Life Changing Moment

A Life Changing Moment

About eight months after the flood, Glen Haven resident Ken Hobert had an experience that really changed his life. Since that night in May, he has stopped smoking, changed his diet, is paying attention to food labels and is exercising regularly. What caused this long-time local to make so many drastic changes? Ken had a heart attack.

Previously he’d never thought about or even knew that cardiac care was available in Estes. That fateful night when nausea, weakness and a suffocating pressure brought him into the Emergency Room, he quickly found out how well equipped our hospital is to handle such life-threatening events.

“I was so impressed with the charge nurse in the ER that night. She went right to work on me and directed the other nurses’ actions, not waiting for the doctor,” said Ken. “I found out later from Dr. Chew that they are trained to act quickly because time is so important during a heart attack.”

Once Scott Chew, MD confirmed that Ken had suffered a heart attack and the staff had stabilized him, Ken was flown by helicopter to the Medical Center of theRockies. Two and a half days later Ken was back in Estes, thanks to the miracle of laparoscopic surgery.

Now, cardiologist Chad Stoltz, MD, sees Ken for follow-up visits at the EPMC Specialty Clinic and monitors his progress with the Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation staff. Ken also continues to see his primary care physician, Guy Van der Werf, MD, at the Estes Park Medical Group (formerly called the Family Medical Clinic).

“I’ve truly come to appreciate that we have the Estes Park Medical Center, and that all of my follow-up care and rehabilitation can happen right here,” said Ken.“It would really be difficult if I had to travel for all of this.”

Thanks to the ongoing community support and EPMC Foundation donors, the Medical Center is able to provide the wide-range of services necessary in our community and continue to be held up as a national example of high-quality care, compassion and friendly service. Do you know the warning signs of a heart attack?

Some of the symptoms may surprise you.

·        Chest discomfort, pressure or pain

·        Pain or discomfort radiating to your shoulders, arms, back, neck, teeth or jaw

·        Stomach pain that may feel like heartburn

·        Shortness of breath

·        Feeling unusually weak

·        Anxiety

·        Light headedness

·        Sudden sweating with cold, clammy skin

·        Nausea and vomiting

The signs and symptoms of a heart attack can develop suddenly. However, they also can develop slowly – over the course of hours, days or weeks. Don’t be tempted to ignore or downplay your symptoms. Call 9-1-1 if you suspect you might behaving a heart attack.

Remember that it’s better to call 9-1-1 and try to relax while the care comes to you, rather than risk your condition deteriorating during a stressful car-ride to the hospital. Medical Center ambulances are equipped with the same life-saving capabilities as the Emergency Department and are in constant contact with the physicians.
