“Every Hour is a Reward” for This Medical Center Volunteer

Marilyn Vergoth has volunteered at the Estes Park Medical Center for 13 years and plans to continue enjoying the limitless rewards and gratification from her work as long as she can. Marilyn is well known amongst the staff for stepping in to help whenever possible and you’ll see her nearly every day making her rounds with the mail cart.

“Being a former teacher, I’m used to helping and being involved,” shared Marilyn. “I am happy to do the running so staff can continue their important work within their departments.”

All of that “running” equates to about 5-7 miles of walking for Marilyn each day. Beyond keeping her physically active, Marilyn also appreciates the mental aspects of her work.

“There are a lot of great teachers at the Medical Center. I’ve learned so many things from the many people I interact with and various situations that arise,” said Marilyn. “All of the lovely people I meet really make life worthwhile.”

Marilyn credits her friend Tara Moenning for getting her started. Tara introduced her to the head of accounting and Marilyn began helping with filing two afternoons a week. Since then, she has helped with Foundation mailings, served as a greeter and filled in at the switchboard, among other things.

“Volunteering is so rewarding,” said Marilyn. “The satisfaction from helping makes me feel like I’m the best paid person in the hospital.”

Regardless of the amount of time a person has to give, Marilyn believes most people would fit in and enjoy volunteering at the Medical Center. Currently the largest need is for hospitality volunteers – greeters who assist patients and visitors at the Lobby Hospitality station. These individuals ensure people find where they need to go and may help a patient in from their car or arrange for a wheelchair if needed. Along those same lines, there is also a new idea just waiting for the right volunteer (or pair of volunteers) to run with it – starting a Care & Comfort Cart service to provide patients and family members a little extra relief and cheer during an extended stay.

If you are interested in getting involved or would like to find out more, please contact Jill Anderson at 970-577-4370 or giving@epmedcenter.com.

“It is such a satisfaction to be able to help others, to make those personal connections and feel appreciated for your contributions,” said Marilyn. “I encourage everyone to think about giving it a try.”
